External Quality Assessment (EQA), sometimes referred to as Proficiency Testing (PT) is an essential aspect of any laboratory operation providing a means of assessing analytical performance compared to other laboratories using the same method and instrument.

A program in which multiple samples are periodically sent to members of a group of laboratories for analysis and/or identification; whereby each laboratory’s results are compared with those of other laboratories in the group and/or with an assigned value, and reported to the participating laboratories and others.

The UK National External Quality Assessment Service for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (UK NEQAS for H&I) provides a comprehensive range of External Quality Assessment (EQA) Schemes for laboratories operating clinical histocompatibility and immunogenetics (H&I) services.

Schemes are available to all clinical laboratories in the UK and overseas and appropriate biotechnology companies.

H&I laboratory support is universally required for both solid organ and haemopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant programmes and for HLA typing for disease susceptibility and diagnosis, pharmacogenetics, volunteer HSC donor panels and HLA ‘matched’ blood products. The primary laboratory investigations are the determination of subjects’ HLA type, HLA antibody detection and specification and the direct crossmatching of patients’ sera against donor cells.

We provided UK NEQAS for H&I with our External Quality Assessment System. The cloud-based system consolidates all aspects of UK NEQAS for H&I’s assessment from registration to results. Users can manage labs, staff, results and reports with ease.

We worked closely with the team at UK NEQAS for H&I to produce a system that is user friendly and futureproof. We eliminated the need for multiple manual processes, providing a flexible solution tailored to UK NEQAS for H&I’s requirements.
